Gluten-Free Bakeries in the Twin Cities

The Twin Cities now has several dedicated gluten-free bakeries that are not accommodating a diet — they are the whole operation. Separate kitchens, celiac-safe practices, and bakers who have thought deeply about what gluten-free bread and pastry can actually be. The gap between these and a "we have a GF option" menu note is significant. If you need it done right, these are the spots.

Sift Gluten Free

The Twin Cities' most established dedicated GF bakery, open since 2013 and distributed across fifty-plus metro locations. The donuts are the introduction — Eater TC called it the city's go-to for GF doughnuts — but the cinnamon rolls, focaccia, pizza crusts, and Scotcheroo bars are all real. Dairy-free options throughout. The products show up at Dogwood Coffee shops and independent markets across the metro if you are not near South Minneapolis.

Atuvava Bakery

Run by a family with celiac disease, small-batch and celiac-safe. What makes Atuvava stand out is the bread: a proper baguette and sandwich loaves with structure, crust, and flavor that are genuinely different from what the GF category usually produces. Cinnamon rolls, scones, cookies, and turnovers fill out the case. Fair-trade ingredients, limited hours, and a line out the door before opening on weekends. Get there early.

Hold the Wheat

A dedicated GF bakery cafe that started as a farmers market side hustle and grew into a full operation in St. Louis Park. The snuggle pies — buttery pastry wrapped around breakfast sausage — are the signature, but the Danish pastries, quiches, biscuits, and custom cakes are all equally serious. Full espresso bar. Vegan and dairy-free options available. The most well-rounded cafe experience of the dedicated GF options.

Olivia's Organic Cafe

A fully GF and peanut-free restaurant with a serious bakery case: cinnamon rolls, caramel rolls, donuts, muffins, tarts, cookies, and specialty cakes, plus a full breakfast and lunch menu. Organic and non-GMO throughout, everything made dairy-free on request. The fried chicken and waffles is the reason to make the Burnsville drive. Suburban but the most complete GF bakery-restaurant in the metro.

Heaven Gluten-Free Bakery

No walk-in retail storefront, but worth knowing: a dedicated GF and vegan artisan bread operation based in Minneapolis, shipping nationwide and offering local pickup at partner locations. The sourdough program is the draw — Original White Sourdough, Cherry Chocolate Bread, and a proper French baguette, all made with a GF sourdough starter. Order online, pick up at a partner location, or have it shipped.
