Theaters in the Twin Cities

On a per-capita basis, the Twin Cities has the most theater seats of any American city outside Manhattan. Tony-winning regional theater on the river, a Black theater company that birthed August Wilson’s career, the oldest improv theater in the country, and a children’s theater company that has won Tonys. There is always something on a stage somewhere here.

Guthrie Theater

The big one. Founded in 1963 by Tyrone Guthrie, housed since 2006 in a startling cobalt-blue Jean Nouvel building cantilevered over the Mississippi. Three stages, a serious classical and contemporary repertory, and the Endless Bridge with one of the best free public views of the river in the city.

Children’s Theatre Company

Next door to Mia. The only theater for young audiences ever to win the regional Tony Award. Productions are full-scale and wildly inventive, the kind of work that reminds you why theater for kids should never be dumbed down.

Penumbra Theatre

Founded in 1976 by Lou Bellamy, Penumbra is the country’s preeminent African American professional theater company. August Wilson developed work here. The programming has shaped American theater more than its size suggests it could.

Mixed Blood Theatre

A West Bank theater company committed to multiracial casting and a no-one-turned-away ticketing policy. The work is often political, frequently funny, and consistently among the most original on Twin Cities stages.

Brave New Workshop (Dudley Riggs Theatre)

Founded by Dudley Riggs in 1958, Brave New Workshop is the longest-running satirical comedy theater in the United States. Now operated by Hennepin Theatre Trust as the Dudley Riggs Theatre. The mainstage shows still routinely sell out.

Theater Latté Da

A musical-theater company that produces in the beautifully restored 1928 Ritz Theater in Northeast. The Ritz hits its 100th anniversary in 2026. Programming runs from classic American musicals to commissioned new work.

Park Square Theatre

The downtown St. Paul mainstay, with two stages running new work and contemporary classics. Recovered from a 2023 fiscal crisis and approaching a 50th anniversary in 2026. The Boss Stage in the basement is one of the more flexible black-box rooms in the metro.

Open Eye Theatre

A Phillips-neighborhood theater specializing in puppet theater, object theater, and work for family audiences that is somehow also serious work for adults. The annual Driveway Tour brings shows to neighborhood driveways across the city in summer.

Pillsbury House Theatre

A theater inside a community center, deeply connected to its South Minneapolis neighborhood and committed to community-driven storytelling. The work is often urgent, frequently new, and consistently among the most necessary in town.

History Theatre

A St. Paul theater dedicated to producing original work about Minnesota and Midwest history. The plays are often surprisingly contemporary in their concerns and consistently introduce audiences to local stories they never knew. A genuine civic asset.
